Bitcoin Self-Custody

When it comes to UTXO management, it’s a good idea to start by buying at least 0.1 Bitcoin and moving it straight into a Trezor cold wallet. These wallets provide a secure way to sign transactions outside your computer’s operating system, protecting you from malware and other risks.

Your UTXOs can be accessed anywhere in the world as long as you have your 12-word recovery phrase. With the help of open-source tools like bitcoin-cli or bx, you can use a bash terminal to connect to the Bitcoin network, recover your private keys, and interact with the blockchain. Since Bitcoin relies on SHA-256, a cryptographic function, your funds are always secure as long as you safeguard your recovery phrase.

UTXOs (Unspent Transaction Outputs) are chunks of Bitcoin transactions stored on the ledger and locked with your private key. Over time, as transaction fees go up, smaller UTXOs can turn into “dust” — tiny amounts that aren’t worth spending because the fees would cost more than the value itself. Think of it like gold dust: it’s there, but it doesn’t really hold much value.

A smart idea to manage this risk is to consolidate your UTXOs in your wallet to avoid getting caught in a high-fee environment where your UTXOs become unspendable. Every cold wallet typically has tools to help with this, but it usually comes down to creating a new transaction that selects multiple UTXOs and sends them back to yourself. This process effectively combines many small inputs into a single UTXO, much like melting gold flakes into a bar of your preferred size.

For day-to-day payments with near-zero fees, the Lightning Network is your best bet. Coinbase now supports Lightning channels, but there are also plenty of other great Lightning wallets like Phoenix, Muun, and Wallet of Satoshi that are easy to use and don’t rely on custodial services.

As Hal Finney predicted, Bitcoin’s main chain will likely end up being used mostly for settling big transactions between financial institutions or sovereign individuals. Over time, Bitcoin could also act as a form of collateral for financial transactions, much like gold did in the past, backing a wide range of financial products and services.
